What we do

What we do

Since 2014, the Kenya Youth Hockey Development Foundation (KYHD) has been offering hockey training to children and young people aged 8 to 18 in Kenya. What began with ten barefoot children in City Park, Nairobi, has grown into a nationwide initiative with more than two hundred participants.

Through hockey, we create new opportunities for children in vulnerable situations. In addition to sports, we offer support in education, mental health, and social development. This includes school scholarships, computer courses, mental resilience training, hot meals, and medical care.

Together with local and international partners, including Dutch hockey clubs and companies, we are building a solid foundation to grow our foundation and reach even more children.

Within the foundation, we distinguish between two types of programs.

  1. The hockey programs take place in various neighborhoods in and around Nairobi. Here, children receive weekly training and guidance, both on and off the field.
  2. There are also scholarship programs. These are intended for talented players who, thanks to their hockey skills, receive a scholarship to attend a boarding school.

Hockey programs: City Park, Lenana, Obama, Impala, Mwiki
Scholarship programs: Agenga, Musingu, Bungoma

Hockeyprograms

1. City Park

City Park, located in Westlands, Nairobi, is where it all began for KYHD. Nearly 60 children train there every Saturday. During breaks, the children receive water, snacks, and a hot meal afterward.

2. Lenana

In the Lenana neighborhood, more than sixty children train several times a week. The training sessions are led by Moses, who started his career at the foundation as a child and played for the Kenyan national team.

3. Obama

The Obama neighborhood is about a half-hour drive from downtown Nairobi. More than 80 children receive training here weekly under the guidance of our dedicated coach, Mandela. He himself joined the foundation as a child.

4. Impala

At Impala, nearly seventy children train under the supervision of four coaches. In addition to hockey training, the children also receive computer lessons, and a group of girls aged 10 to 14 participated in mental health sessions led by our resident psychologist, Maria.

5. Mwiki

Mwiki is our newest program, launched at the end of 2024. Over 40 children train weekly at Mwiki Secondary School under the guidance of coach Weslay Maina. This program is a great example of how we're expanding our mission: the more children have the opportunity to play hockey, the better.

Scholarships

1. Agenga

Eighteen of our girls from the program, aged 14 to 18, have received a four-year scholarship to the Agenga Boarding School for their hockey talent. At this boarding school, they receive education, housing, and food, and participate in hockey tournaments. The foundation provides these girls, as well as other students at the school, with hockey sticks, shoes, and other hockey equipment.

2. Misungu

Since 2024, boys from our program have also had the opportunity to receive a four-year scholarship to a boarding school based on their hockey talent. Currently, 21 boys are enrolled in a boarding school thanks to this scholarship, 11 of whom attend Musingu Boys High School. The children are between 14 and 18 years old.

3. Bungoma

Ten boys from our program have received four-year scholarships to Bungoma High School. Thanks to their hockey talent, they hope to elevate the school team to a higher level. The boys will receive instruction at the boarding school, and the foundation will support them and the team with hockey equipment, such as sticks and shoes.
